THE DVD:
VIDEO QUALITY:MGM has put together an enjoyable, but not quite perfect video transfer for "At First Sight". The image, letterboxed at 1.85:1(there is also a full-frame version), is anamorphic enhanced and has its positive aspects and slightly negative ones. The image captures the sort of cold, natural style that John Seale("City Of Angels"), has filmed this in well; a lot of the scenes seem to be filmed in a slightly soft focus, but still overall, I would have liked to have seen the general image a little bit sharper for portions of the disk; the lower light scenes seem to lack a little bit of detail. The occasional flare of colors, such as yellow flowers on a desk or bright fruit, are enjoyable. Most enjoyable are the scenes of the streets of New York City: these scenes are bright and have nice detail to them. Another good example of an enjoyably presented scene is when Kilmer's character teaches Sorvino's to ice skate. The snowy winter landscape looks beautiful.

I didn't see this film in the theaters so I don't know if it was the same way, but this image occasionally seems to be a little dark. Occasionally, there are artifacts, but they are very slight. Color saturation is enjoyable, but not quite perfect.

SOUND: An enjoyable, yet soft presentation. Mark Isham's beautiful score sounds lovely and rich throughout the movie. There really isn't anything agressive or terribly detailed; surrounds are occasionally used, but very slightly, to add a texture or another layer to the presentation of the environment. Nothing much in the way of bass at all. Dialogue sounds natural.

MENUS: Fairly basic movie-related main menu.

Final Thought: I really was suprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. Performances are very good and I thought the dialogue and plot were quite good. Entertaining, well done, and the disc is a fairly nice presentation. Definitely worth checking out, at least as a rental.
