A Guide TO Current Film

Mike Meyers stars in this very funny spoof of the secret agent genre in a dual role as Dr. Evil as well as the title character, Austin Powers. Powers is a swinging secret agent from the 60's who was frozen in time when Dr. Evil escaped into space. Austin teams up in the 90's with the daughter of his former partner, played by Elizabeth Hurley. A film that didn't seem to hold anything great with it's trailers, it took off in the Spring of 1997 with solid word of mouth, and it's well deserved. It's a very funny film with some great comedic moments from Meyers.
As for the DVD, New Line has done a pretty darn good job transfering this film to disc. There are a few little weird things, like the fact that the film seems to be in multiple aspect ratios. A couple of scenes are 2.35:1 and the rest of them seem to be about 1.85:1. The box for the disc says it's 2.1, so who knows, I guess I'll go with that. The transfer itself is really, really great; there are moments that are great to show off how good the format is; look at the colors in the opening dance number in the streets or in the club. The colors of the clothing are very vibrant and just jump off the screen. New Line has really done a great job with the transfer; the audio is very good as well but isn't very agressive. Even so, it's well recorded(with one exception which I'll mention in the extras section).
The extras on this disc are great, like all the other Platinum Editions from New Line. There's commentary from Mike Meyers and director Jay Roach. The only problem here is that you can't hear the film while the commentary is taking place. Meyers and Roach talk for a while and then it's.....silence. Also , but not really that big of a problem is that the commentary is recorded in stereo. Meyers comes from one side and Roach comes from the other with the commentary. It just depends on your likes/dislikes if you like or...dislike stereo commentary. The commentary itself, though, is well worth a listen. Meyers and Roach are really quite funny and entertaining. Also included are 6 deleted scenes and 2 alternate endings, all of which are interesting and quite funny. Also, look through the star biographies for clips from the star's other films. Rounding out the extras are a "Cameo Menu", trailer and an animated sequence.
Very good movie, very good deal.
