THIS WEEK:
This week "Stigmata" launches into theaters and although the recent run of the sort of supernatural thrillers does suggest that audiences are wanting more, one has to ask how much more. Although MGM was able to secure a fairly wide release for the film this weekend, it remains to be seen if the film can get above the rather poor reviews it recieved this weekend. The other question is, can Patricia Arquette open a film? Luckily for the film, it does have a solid trailer and TV ad, which should bring audiences in. Look for it to open at 10m.
Besides "6th Sense"(which should continue its run at the top spot this weekend), "Stigmata"'s main competition is the other opener, "Stir Of Echoes". Although
"Stir" has been getting the better reviews, it doesn't quite have the amount of theaters that "Stigmata" is opening in. Still, indie studio Artisian has promoted the film nicely, attaching "Stir" trailers to box office hit "The Blair Witch Project". Audiences certainly will see "Stir" this weekend, but I think that it won't quite beat "Stigmata". Look for "Stir" to open with about 8 million dollars. I doubt that the new release "Love Stinks" will even find its way into the top 10. Also look for "Runaway Bride" to keep running nicely through the weekend, although it may start to finally lose steam once Costner's romantic drama "For Love Of The Game" hits theaters next week.
Saturday Notes:
"Stigmata" opens suprisingly well, knocking off "6th Sense" from the top spot for the first time in weeks. "Chill Factor" and "13th Warrior" continue to have fairly large drops. "Stir Of Echoes" doesn't make much of a stir on Friday as the film looks to open with about 5-6m. "Stigmata"'s high grosses should definitely please MGM, who haven't had a hit since...well, I can't remember.
