The Movie:

Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek star in this rather sitcom-ish romantic comedy that, while managing to be cute, doesn't really go too far with the concept. While taking on a new construction job in Vegas, Alex(Perry) runs into Isabel(Hayek). After a one-night stand, she returns months later to break the news that she's pregnant. Quickly, they get married, but things don't work quite right.

He has trouble getting along with her family, and she has trouble getting along with his. The usual complications occur in a romantic film like this, breaking up the two for a period before they will, inevitably, get back together in the end. What makes the difference in a film like this is whether or not the characters are likable enough to follow to the end.

"Fools" may not be anything new, but it does contain a funny performance from Perry(doing a slightly calmer version of his "Friends" character) and an enjoyably sweet performance from Hayek. The two reportedly did not get along well during the production, but they manage to make a nice couple on-screen.

At nearly two hours, the film does go on a little too long, but there are enough pleasant moments and funny remarks to carry the audience through. Good for a rental.

The DVD

VIDEO Beautiful scenery is allowed to look its best on Tristar's strong transfer, which has warm, striking colors that look impressive. Images are not only sharp, but look pleasingly smooth as well. Flesh tones are accurate and artifacts are occasionally noticable, but don't become distracting. Not the best work from the studio, but still very good. Viewers can choose either a full-frame or letterboxed version.

SOUND: The music is presented wonderfully, enveloping the listener. Other than that, this sticks to the usual from a romantic comedy, which is simply to present the dialogue clearly. Still, I found the audio very enjoyable, and above average for a film of this genre.

MENUS:: The menus are non-animated with basic, film-themed images.

EXTRAS: The theatrical trailer.

Final Thoughts: If you're looking for a cute romantic comedy, "Fools Rush In" is worth a rental.
