The Movie:

I'd never seen "Fox and The Hound" before sitting down to watch it on this DVD presentation. I found it to be one of the more enjoyable Disney cartoons, with well-written dialogue and entertaining work from the actors who provided the voices. The story revolves around an orphaned Fox cub named Tod and a hunting dog named Copper who become friends when they're young, but when they grow up, they realize that they're supposed to be enemies.

If there's a problem with the film, it's that it goes on a little too long, even at 83 minutes. A sizable chunk of the movie is devoted to the two friends playing around in the forest as youngsters, and while the sequences are cute and fun, I felt they got a little too long - most kids will probably get a little bored, as well.

Although the animation isn't as sharp and detailed as recent pictures, it certainly is well done for the time, with bright and smooth images. The story takes a little while to get started, but it's a cute offering from Disney. Not one of their best, but still recommended.

The DVD

VIDEO: "Fox and The Hound" is presented in a full-frame edition that is moderately enjoyable, although there are some faults that are noticable. Images are generally crisp and clean, although there are some sequences that seem slightly on the soft and fuzzy side. Colors, on the other hand, are quite pleasant, with rich, warm tones that don't seem faded.

Aside from a slightly grainy look on occasion, there is also the occasional mark on the print used, but in general, the print looked fairly clean for a 19 year old film.

SOUND: The audio for "The Fox and The Hound" is basic, but perfectly acceptable. There are no problems with hiss or distortion, and the presentation clearly and cleanly offers the songs(some of which are rather annoying) and the music. Dialogue is fine, as well.

MENUS:: As usual, Disney has invested no creativity in the presentation for their menus, with simple, basic menus that have no animation.

EXTRAS: The trailer, a read along, and a trivia game. And, of course, Disney's annoying "preview trailers" play when the disc first is put in the player.
