The Movie:
Although I'm too young to be familar with much of Peter Frampton's music, this concert performance still does show Frampton as a great performer - the singer and his band go through many of their top hits with impressive energy and a good sense of fun - it's obvious that the group is enjoying playing for the audience, and that the audience is definitely digging the music.

The DVD
VIDEO/AUDIO: The picture quality on this anamorphic transfer(letterboxed at about 1.85:1) is nothing short of remarkable for a concert presentation. Images have a consistently sharp, detailed and smooth feel to them that makes for a "you-are-there" feeling of being at the concert in your own viewing room. Colors are bold and rich, with the concert lighting looking clear and solid. Black level is strong, as well. Flesh tones of the performers are accurate and natural, as well. There's really no major flaws to be found, and the only minor ones are a few shots that look the slightest bit soft. These are very minor compliants, though - the rest of the presentation offers wonderful image quality that will definitely please fans of Frampton.
As good as picture quality is, sound quality is similarly pleasing. As with many Image Entertainment concert releases, this disc offers both a Dolby Digital and DTS soundtrack. Both soundtracks offer a very enjoyable concert experience, but the DTS offers finer detail and a richer, smoother overall sound. Surrounds are used well for crowd sounds, and don't overpower the music, which sounds incredibly well-recorded. The entire sound mix as a whole has a nicely "balanced" feel that really makes the room come alive nicely and never becomes distracting. There's a great detail to the music, and almost every note seems to come through clearly on its own. Last, but not least, Frampton's vocals come through clearly and lyrics are always easily understood. Nothing overpowers anything else, everything sounds clear and rich, and overall, this is really an excellent sounding presentation.
MENUS:: Some wonderfully animated main menus that offer clips and music from the concert in the background.
EXTRAS:: Although many Image concert DVDs don't offer much besides the show itself, "Live In Detroit" does have some nice supplemental features. The biggest one is an interview with Frampton in his studio where he talks about the history of his music as well as the possibilities and features of DVD. The interview lasts about 26 minutes. Also included are a discography, biography, and information about the website and fan club.
Final Thoughts: Even if you're not familiar with Frampton, "Live In Detroit" is recommended as at least a rental - it offers stunning picture and sound quality, as well as a great performance from Frampton and the band.
