The Movie:
Ah, the "Major League" series. There's something about "Major League", like "Police Academy", where audiences have really come to accept (and goof on) the series, no matter which direction it goes towards. Going towards number 3 was a bit much, but actually, this film does provide some laughs sprinkled throughout.
Scott Bakula(awww...why'd they have to go and cancel "Quantum Leap"?) stars as Gus Cantrell, pitcher for the Twins. He's a player with considerable skills, but he's having a hard time, so the owner gives him a choice: be the manager he needs for the AAA farm team.
Of course, the team turns out to be a new bunch of weirdos that Bakula's coach has to pull together to win the day when they find out they're playing the big-league team in a promotional game. Predictable and silly, "Major League 3" offers a good performance from Bakula holds together what's otherwise a fairly low-key(and low-budget) effort. And what "Major League" film would be complete without the commentary from Bob Uecker's character?
The DVD
VIDEO: This is a good transfer from Warner Brothers, but it's not their best work. Images remain crisp and sharp, and colors are really the most impressive element that the image quality has to offer. Colors are rich, warm and frequently impressive, making the ballpark look like a place I'd like to be right now. Black level is good, and flesh tones remain natural.
There's a few little problems here and there; occasionally, there are trace amounts of pixelation and a little bit of shimmering. The print used has a mark or two on it, but certainly nothing distracting. All in all, it's good stuff, but a little short of being "great".
SOUND: The DVD contains a fairly unremarkable audio track. Mainly pushing the dialogue, it's only during the games that the audio really opens up. The music has a fairly appealing presence, sounding clear and clean, and maintaining a nice enveloping feel. Dialogue, the main course of any film like this one, sounds clear and never edgy or thin.
MENUS:: Warner has done a nice job, taking the cover art and adding some nice animation and background music, making for a cool intro to the movie.
EXTRAS: The trailer, trailers for "Ace Ventura", "Major League 2", "Wrongfully Accused", and a short featurette.
