The film:

This is the second DVD release from Mariah Carey that I've reviewed and definitely not the more successful of the two. Her other DVD that I've looked at ("The #1's") was a compilation of videos of her most popular songs, with a little clip of Mariah talking at the end of each song - if you didn't want to listen, you could simply skip forward to the next song. "Around The World" has footage of some of her songs performed live in concert around the world, but a good deal of it is simply Mariah on tour or the singer's thoughts on fame.

While serious fans of the singer might find what she has to say on the subject interesting, I really didn't find anything informative or much worth listening to. And when the quality of the concert presentation portions was as good as it is, I'd rather be watching that instead. The songs that are included are: Butterfly Intro/Emotions, Fantasy, Dreamlover, My All, I Still Believe, I'll Be There (with Trey Lorenz), Hopelessly Devoted to You (with Olivia Newton-John), Whenever You Call (with Brian McKnight), Honey, Hero. The presenation itself lasts only about 42 minutes. There are also 4 videos included - "The Roof", "My All", "Breakdown" and "Butterfly"(all are in Dolby Digital 5.1).

The audio and video quality of the performance footage is quite good -a sharp, clear full-frame picture and wonderful sound that has a strong amount of bass and presents not only the background music but Mariah's voice quite well. The videos are just as strong in both audio and video quality.

All in all, the quality isn't that bad, but the program itself would work much better if it had not been broken up with the additional footage in-between, and has just been a more formal concert. No complaints about the DVD quality, though - the menus are stylish, and the additional video menu shows clips of each of the 4 videos. Audio/video quality is good as well. If you're a fan you might find this of more interest, but I'd personally recommend a rental.
