The Movie: One of the more pleasant DVD ideas I've seen in recent memory, DVD International has combined music with images in their new Naxos Musical Journey series. With this edition, they combine the music of Mozart with images from both Italy and Austria. Images have their problems in terms of quality. While the scenery is unquestionably beautiful, the full-frame image tends to look soft and lacking in detail, although I found the colors to be generally rich and pleasing. There are some slight instances of pixelation and shimmering, but these are limited and not distracting. It's certainly not too bad, but I would have liked to have seen a slightly smoother look to the presentation. The sound is presented in both Dolby Digital and DTS audio, and the disc lets viewers skip back and forth with the remote to compare. Both sound excellent, and present the viewer with a room-filling performance of the classical music. Sound flows cleanly from all speakers, and projects an intense, dynamic presence. If anyone is looking for more music from Mozart, there is a DTS CD offered called "Classic Mozart", which also sounds excellent. I really enjoyed the opportunity to hear this marvelous music in both Dolby Digital and DTS, but I would have liked more to this presentation. Although I'm fine with the price for the material offered, I would have liked for another, extra audio track to talk about the scenes shown, or something that talks more about the locations in general. Still, it's a good start for a good idea.  Grade:B- |
