The Movie:
I've never had the chance to see Neil Young live, but, with the wonder of the DVD format, viewers can at least get an opportunity to witness a powerful performance of his; "Silver and Gold" is definitely a treat. The setting is simple; Young singing his heart out, and playing accoustic guitar, harmonica and other instruments to his very best ability. If you're at all a fan of the singer, I highly recommend this intimate, accoustic performance.

The DVD
VIDEO/AUDIO: The audio quality for this concert is quite enjoyable, although there are a few things worth noting. It does capture the music quite well; Young is wonderfully talented whether playing the piano, harmonica or accoustic guitar, and the audio captures every note of his performance with warmth and clarity. The singing is easily understood, but occasionally I felt it had a bit of an echo-ish "hall" quality. Nothing terribly distracting, and it didn't really take away from the overall audio, which was very good. Surrounds are really just used for crowd noise between songs, and practically every clap and yell from the crowd is audible.
The video quality is quite excellent for a presentation of this type. Depending on the production, sometimes concert DVDs tend to look soft or hazy; I was suprised and extremely pleased to see that this DVD offers an anamorphic transfer of the concert, letterboxed at about 1.85:1. Sharpness and clarity are both quite good; even when the stage becomes a little dark, we can still see Young clearly. Stage lighting is not terribly complex, but this DVD captures the colors quite well as they fall down to the stage. In terms of the concert DVDs that I've reviewed, this really stands up, in terms of picture quality, as one of the best.
MENUS:: Basic menus showing pictures of the performance, but they're easily navigated and nicely laid out.

Final Thoughts: I would have liked a couple of additional extra features, but the performance as well as the audio and video quality are top notch, and the low price makes this well worth a look. Highly recommended.
