In Short: The first (and best) of the series gets a fine New Line DVD edition.

Other Reviews:Poison Ivy 3,Poison Ivy 2
The first in the series, and arguably the only one to really achieve cult status, "Poison Ivy" stars Drew Barrymore as Ivy, the new girl in town looking to fit in. Soon, after making friends with Sylvie(Roseanne's Sara Gilbert), she begins to take control of her family. What really elevated this first picture to attain at least some popularity is the strength of Barrymore's performance in the lead role. This is the first time I've seen this movie and although it's not the kind of movie that's going to win awards, it's certainly an entertaining little flick and I was suprised. Mainly though, one focuses on Barrymore's performance and how different she looks 7 years ago.
The DVD
VIDEO: Although not perfect, I found this to be slightly a more enjoyable viewing experience than "Poison Ivy 3", which is the other edition of this series I've watched so far. The image is still not razor sharp, but it is certainly adequate and crisp. There were only a few dark indoor scenes that seemed a little on the hazy side to me, or wanting in detail. Detail, for the most part, is good, but not excellent. Although this isn't a really colorful movie to begin with, the colors on display do look natural and accurate, such as when Ivy and Sylvie are walking through the forest early on. Flesh tones are fine as well, looking natural.
There are really very few problems on this anamorphic transfer; aside from some scenes looking a bit grainy, there really aren't any instances of shimmering or pixelization. The print used is in fine condition as well. Although not a perfect looking picture, it's certainly a good effort and I think fans of this film(which there seems to be a lot of), will certainly find this enjoyable. There are the R/Unrated versions of the picture in both widescreen and full-frame included on this disc.
SOUND: Almost completely dialogue driven. There are touches of score now and then, but they really don't make much of an impact or impression. Dialogue is clear and without problems. Not much to it, really, but what there is sounds alright.
MENUS: Stylish but basic menus with no animation.
EXTRAS:: The trailer. Like the rest of the series, New Line has included both the unrated and R-rated versions of the movie on this DVD.
Final Thoughts: I was suprised by how decent this film was, even though it's Barrymore's performance that really is the best thing about it. Would have liked to have seen more in the way of extras on this, the most popular of the series, but oh well.
