The film: Titled "Insanity", issue number 6 in the Short Cinema Journal series is weirdly funny, with a number of odd, hilarious short films. First off is "The Bad Plant", a well-animated short film about a plant that wants to get away from it's current confines in a small house. Offered with this great little film is director's commentary and storyboards, along with production notes, which every feature on this DVD comes with. The most entertaining short feature on the disc, in my opinion, is "Frankie Goes To Hollywood", a 12 minute "dogumentary" about the dog that appeared in one of the early scenes of "Armageddon". Interviews are included with director Michael Bay and a number of other stars from the film, talking about working with Frankie. Most hilarious is comments from Billy Bob Thornton, who gives the dog acting tips. It's a short with a great sense of humor, and the interviews with the stars talking about Frankie are hilarious. Also included with this short film are production notes. Another of the oddly interesting highlights is "Blue City", a story about a depressed man living in the inner city and the way his tale connects with that of two thieves. "Blue City" includes director's commentary. That's certainly not all. There are a number of additional shorts included in this package, including "Midnight Dance", "Black Coffee", "Bovine Vendetta", "El Banquette" and "60 Channels - Beyond The Rhythm". While I enjoyed all of the shorts included at some level, I still have saw I found "Frankie" and "The Bad Plant" to be the most entertaining. As usual from both the "Short" and "Circuit" series, there are commentaries included for some of the features, although the next edition(#7) includes more extras. The DVD The video quality with these short films varies due to the size and budget for each, with some looking rather soft and some looking impressively sharp. In general though, they are certainly of watchable quality, with little or no flaws in terms of shimmering or scratches/marks on the image. Sound quality is very basic as well, but always easily understood. Menus are similar to other offerings from Short and its musical cousin, Circuit Magazine Journal. They're flashy and very busy, with animation on almost each menu, and sometimes, a clip between menu and submenu. Before some of the features, there is an advertisement, but you can click past that. For $14.95, "Short 6" is certainly worth picking up, with "Frankie" certainly being a highlight among a number of cool shorts.
