The Movie:

"Wolves" is one of the better IMAX features I've had the pleasure to view; dealing with Wolves in their environment, the movie takes a look at the obstacles that they have to face to survive, as well as how humans must learn that the animals have their place, as well. The film takes an up-close look at these creatures, and the information that the film offers about how these creatures lives is fascinating.

The DVD

VIDEO: A large portion of this presentation looks wonderful, but there are some faults here and there that brings it below the usual quality that is exhibited with IMAX presentations on DVD. Sharpness is quite good, and detail is pleasing as well. Colors, as with any nature film like this one, reflect the beauty of the environment and capture quite a lot of pleasing, vibrant colors. Flesh tones are accurate, as well. Occasionally, the print used looks a little dirty, and there are some occasions where shimmering is apparent. Other than that, when the picture looks clean and everything comes together, "Wolves" presents impressive image quality - it's unfortunate it couldn't be a little more consistent.

SOUND: As with many IMAX features, the audio on "Wolves" opens up the the room completely to build the environment of nature; various subtle wildlife sounds are placed all around the viewer, making for a very convincing sense of environment. Surrounds are used very often and really add to building the space. The music score appears and dissapears here and there, but when it does enter the picture, it has a soft, pleasing presence. The narration is a little edgy at times, but mainly comes through clearly.

MENUS:: Film-themed, non-animated menus. It's a little awkward getting around the menus at times, but they are otherwise nicely done, with images of wolves in the background.

EXTRAS: A trailer for "Wolves" as well as other Slingshot titles; a 15 minute documentary on how the film crews were able to get close to the Wolves and also, a longer 45 minut documentary on "The Survival of the Yellowstone Wolves".

Final Thoughts: It all adds up to one of the better IMAX DVDs that I've seen; good video quality, strong audio quality and a couple of informative documentaries finish up the package. Recommended.
