The Disc: I've been listening to Sting's latest album for a few months now on this DTS CD presentation, and it's amazing how songs have almost "opened up" to me since I first heard it. Originally purchasing it because I liked the "Desert Rose" single, eventually I began to warm up to other songs; although I don't like all of the songs on the album - a few are a little too "out there", or, in other words, veering too far off from what Sting does best; elegant, yet powerful rock. I shouldn't be critical of a musician trying new things, but songs like "Perfect Love...Gone Wrong" just don't work for me. "Brand New Day" is one of several DTS music CDs I've had the great pleasure of listening to. The way the songs are presented in these mixes is often brilliant, enveloping the listener in a universe of music that almost takes on a life of its own. I must say, "Brand New Day" really stands out as the best release I've heard in the way that the music fills the room to the point where the speakers almost dissapear and it feels as if the musicians are playing in the same room. Rather than simply listening, you're almost experiencing the music. The most enjoyable tracks, in my opinion, are "Desert Rose", "After The Rain Has Fallen", "The End Of The Game" and "Brand New Day". The opening of "The End Of The Game" is a perfect example of getting caught up in the music, as it goes from a simple drum beat with some subtle background music to a sweeping epic of guitars and Sting's always excellent vocals. As for audio quality, it doesn't get much better than this for music. I don't think I've ever heard music sound more full-bodied and rich than on this CD. Surrounds are used very agressively, and yet appropriately for a wonderful sounding presentation that I listen to very often. Similar results are apparent on the DTS CD release of "Ten Summoner's Tales", whose most popular single is certainly still "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You", with other fine songs including "It's Probably Me" and "Heavy Cloud, No Rain". "If I Ever Lose My Faith" and "Heavy Cloud" are my favorites in terms of audio, as every note of the funky "Heavy Cloud" is captured with the utmost clarity and the music is wonderfully enveloping for "If I Ever Lose". Both "Brand" and "Tales" sound very good, but "Brand New Day" sounds slightly richer and more dynamic than the previous release. "Brand New Day" is also a 24-bit release, while "Ten Summoner's Tales" is 20. Both are very good albums and sound fantastic on this DVD. Both are worth adding to your collection and wonderfully show what surround sound music can offer at its very best.
