The DVD

VIDEO: "Star Trek Voyager" is presented again in 1.33:1 full-frame throughout these fourth season episodes. As Paramount has done with their TV-on-DVD product in general, the image quality is very good. Sharpness and detail are usually first-rate, although some slight softness intrudes during some of the darker/dimly-lit moments.

The picture was largely free of flaws, but a few minor ones did poke through: some slight traces of pixelation were spotted on a couple of occasions, while a little shimmering was noticed once or twice. Colors remained accurately rendered and crisp, as well.

SOUND: "Star Trek Voyager" is presented here in Dolby Digital 5.1. The show's soundtrack provides an enjoyable listening experience. Despite not being to the level of a modern film soundtrack, these multichannel offerings do provide a very reasonable level of activity. Flyovers are present in several scenes and some other effects occasionally are offered by the rear speakers. Some minor ambience and score reinforcement are also present in the surrounds. Audio quality is perfectly fine, with clear dialogue and crisp-sounding effects and music.

EXTRAS: The last disc in the set offers a series of featurettes, with the first being "Braving the Unknown: Season 4". This 21-minute documentary visits with the cast and crew of the series, who chat about the developments in this season, including the popular introduction to the Seven-of-Nine character and both fan reaction and how it effected the series. We also learn more about character relationships and how they've formed and changed during these episodes. The show's creators also discuss the genesis of certain plot developments and story elements.

“Time Capsule: Seven of Nine” is a 13-minute piece that focuses more on the addition of the character; we get interview footage from actress Jeri Ryan and the show's creators. “Time Capsule: Harry Kim” is a 14-minute piece about the character, with interviews from actor Garrett Wang and the show's creators. “The Birth of Species 8472” looks at the introduction to this new alien species and "The Art Of Alien Worlds" takes a look at the various kinds of visual effects employed in the creation of various scenes in the series.

Finally, we get a photo gallery and a trailer for "Trekkies 2".

Final Thoughts: Although I haven't gotten into "Voyager" like I began to enjoy "Next Generation" when watching the DVD sets for that show, "Voyager" does offer fine performances and interesting plotlines. The addition of Seven-of-Nine also opened some new angles this season. Once again, Paramount delivers a fine DVD set, with very good audio/video quality and a fine amount of supplements. Recommended.
