The Movie: The complete third season of the popular series is included on this set. "The Andy Griffith Show", which ran from 1960-1968, starred Andy Griffith as Andy Taylor, a small-town widower who ends up in Mayberry, NC, living with Aunt Bee and his son, Opie (Ron Howard). Andy becomes the town's sheriff and, despite the fact that there's really never much crime in the city, Andy - aided by bumbling deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts) - still manages to keep peace in the town and settle disputes. The show's theme music is one of the most famous ever created, and "Andy Griffith" continues today in syndication. This third season starts off with "Mr. McBeevee", which has Opie going off into the woods and meeting a telephone repairman who gives him a quarter. When he returns from the woods, Andy doesn't believe his tall tale of where the quarter came from and wants to punish him, but eventually comes to believe his son. Other highlights from the season include: "The Bank Job", where Barney tells everyone that the town bank doesn't have enough security, then gets himself locked in the vault; "Convicts-at-Large", where Barney gets caught by three escaped female convicts; "Class Reunion", where Andy sees his high school sweetheart at his reunion; "Barney's First Car", where Barney saves up to get his first car, then has it break down and "Barney and the Governor", where Barney tickets the governor's car. Also, this season marks the debut of Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle. Note: small type on the bottom of the back of the box notes that "some episodes may be edited from their original network versions", which I can only take to mean that the syndicated version of the episode is the one presented here which, if true, would be too bad. 64. 3- 1 Mr. McBeevee 65. 3- 2 Andy's Rich Girlfriend 66. 3- 3 Andy and the New Mayor 67. 3- 4 Andy and Opie, Bachelors 68. 3- 5 The Cow Thief 69. 3- 6 Barney Mends a Broken Heart 70. 3- 7 Lawman Barney 71. 3- 8 The Mayberry Band 72. 3- 9 Floyd the Gay Deceiver 73. 3-10 Opie's Rival 74. 3-11 Convicts-at-Large 75. 3-12 The Bed Jacket 76. 3-13 The Bank Job 77. 3-14 One-Punch Opie 78. 3-15 Barney and the Governor 79. 3-16 Man in a Hurry 80. 3-17 High Noon in Mayberry 81. 3-18 The Loaded Goat 82. 3-19 Class Reunion 83. 3-20 Rafe Hollister Sings 84. 3-21 Opie and the Spoiled Kid 85. 3-22 The Great Filling Station Robbery 86. 3-23 Andy Discovers America 87. 3-24 Aunt Bee's Medicine Man 88. 3-25 The Darlings Are Coming 89. 3-26 Andy's English Valet 90. 3-27 Barney's First Car 91. 3-28 The Rivals 92. 3-29 A Wife for Andy 93. 3-30 Dogs, Dogs, Dogs 94. 3-31 Mountain Wedding 95. 3-32 The Big House The DVD VIDEO: "Andy Griffth Show" is presented by Paramount in 1.33:1 full-frame, its original aspect ratio, on this second season set. The presentation quality is quite good, with only a few minor concerns on occasion. Sharpness and detail are acceptable and satisfactory, as detail is fine and only some minor softness and inconsistencies intrude. Aside from the understandable minor softness, the picture didn't really suffer from issues. A little bit of shimmering was spotted at times, and some light wear was spotted on some of the episodes. Overall, the B & W presentation looked quite pleasing. SOUND: "Andy Griffith" is presented in mono. The show's audio presentation seemed slightly above-average for the era. Audio quality was fairly crisp and clear, with no distortion or other concerns. The sound could seem a tad thin at times, but was mostly fine. EXTRAS: The set includes the original sponsor TV spots as an extra. Final Thoughts: "Andy Griffith Show"'s third season includes some gems, and although it's too bad that not many supplements are offered, fans should be pleased that the episodes offer fine audio/video quality.
