The Movie: "Boy Meets World" remained a popular teen series on ABC from 1994-2000, serving much of its time as an anchor for the popular TGIF Friday prime-time line-up for the network. The show starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews, an everykid working his way through school and dealing with all of the issues that kids deal with today and way back when in the 1990's. His best pal is Shawn (Ryder Strong), who manages to be a good friend, and yet get himself in trouble on several occasions. Cory's love interest is Topanga (Danielle Fishel), who, up until this season, had been Cory's friend. The opening episode of this season has Cory deciding to finally ask Topanga to be his girlfriend, only to find that Shawn has already beaten him to the punch, causing a rift in their friendship that drives Cory to ask out another girl (Brittany Murphy, in an early performance). The series still holds up fairly well after all these years. Sure, there is always a moral delivered at the end of every episode, but the show often does its best to try and not push it on the audience in a way that's too heavy-handed. Aside from respectable writing, the performances were also the reason why the show was as well-liked as it was. Despite not offering performances that are really remarkable in any way, Strong and Savage offer good sitcom efforts and also manage to be convincing friends. Also offering fine supporting efforts are William Daniels as next-door neighbor and principal George Feeney and Will Friedle as Eric, Cory's not-particularly-bright older brother. The image quality is quite good considering the material. Sharpness and detail remained consistently good throughout most of the running time, with only the ocasional hint of softness appearing. Overall, the general look of the show seems slightly better than broadcast quality. The presentation did show some minor shimmering, but no edge enhancement or pixelation were seen, and the elements appeared to be in excellent condition, with no faults. Colors appeared bright and vivid, with no smearing or other issues. SOUND: The episodes are offered in Dolby 2.0 audio, with clear dialogue and occasional music. EXTRAS: An interactive quiz. Final Thoughts: "Boy Meets World" is a good-natured show that offers a nice lesson, fine performances and satisfactory writing. While the show still isn't really exceptional in any way, it's still mildly enjoyable and surprisingly, doesn't seem that dated several years later. Buena Vista's DVD set provides fine audio/video quality, but little in the way of supplements. Recommended for fans. |
