The Movie:

"Live! Tonight! Sold Out!" covers Nirvana's 1991/1992 tour, which I clearly remember standing out in line to get tickets for on one of the coldest days I think I've ever experienced in my lifetime. Although I don't see concerts as much as I used to, the concert was certainly worth nearly losing fingers to frostbite. The concert documentary is taken from several shows during the tour (not mine, or I'd be looking for myself in the audience) and inserts footage from the band's interviews and awards ("Headbanger's Ball", the MTV awards, foreign interviews, etc.) in-between songs. The concert presents a good selection from the band's catalog and the performances are terrific; the clips in-between would be a bother in a different concert documentary, but here they give a good look at bits of Nirvana's history.

The DVD

VIDEO: The presentation is offered from Universal Music in 1.33:1 full-frame, the show's original aspect ratio. Image quality is never poor, but it's understandable that, with songs here coming from different concerts, some segments look quite crisp and clear and others look like they were recorded on a camera not too far above basic consumer level. The elements do show some grain and slight wear, but nothing too serious. Some light shimmering is on seen on a few occasions. Colors looked somewhat smeary at times, but generally looked okay.

SOUND: The audio is presented in remastered Dolby Digital 5.1. The new 5.1 soundtrack does open the soundtrack out slightly, but one has to keep in mind that the recording was done over a decade ago. Additionally, the audio quality varies depending on the song and concert shown; while some songs are crisp and clear, others sound as if they were recorded from out in the audience.

EXTRAS: See the additional "Live in Amsterdam" tracks above.

Final Thoughts: "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!" provides a solid concert documentary that offers great performances, as well as some archive footage that will be of interest to fans. Audio/video quality is reasonably good. Recommended for fans.
