Review:
I think the best soundtracks are as cinematic as the film they are placed behind; we get an overall feeling for the tones and emotions of the movie even if we haven't already seen it. Thereare highs, quiet moments, emotions and everything in between. It seems rare today that we don't get a soundtrack(especially in teen films), where the songs are placed together in a fracturedexperience meant not for enjoyment and to improve the film, but simply for album sales. There are even films(the upcoming "Idle Hands") where we seem to get a film built around a soundtrack or band(in that case, The Offspring).

The "Go" soundtrack is simply quite effective because all of the songs feel like they belong as a part of the greater whole; even if I didn't care for every song on the soundtrack, I felt that they were all a piece ofthe bigger musical story. Above and beyond that, this soundtrack(or at least the first half) captures something incredible; it accurately brings out the feelings of that golden era of the 90'syouth; that period right after you're able to get out of the house and explore the world and right before the 9 to 5 life of work ushers you in. That period where where you have not a care in the world and even fewer fears of it. It brought back memories of my own of hanging out in clubs or enjoying a late night rock concert or just the feeling of freedom that you can only enjoy after the sun sets.

This album starts off wonderfully and has a beautiful sense of where to place the songs; it's a great mix of beauty and the major beats. It starts off with the fantastic new single, "New", by No Doubt, which combines a slight bit of ska into the background of a great rock melody and lyrics. It then moves to a joyful, fun and funky song by a band I'd never heard of called Len, and hopefully they'll have moresuccessful songs like this one. The album really hits a high with the next three tracks: a fantastically enjoyable remix of "Magic Carpet Ride" with some added beats and funky turntable effectsthat reminded me slightly of the magical things that Beck and the Beastie Boys Mike D. did on the remix album for the John Spencer Blues Explosion. The album just keeps pulling out the successeswith a lovely, touching song by Natalie Imbruglia called "Troubled By The Way We Came Together" that has just the right bit of a beat behind it to keep the tone of forward momentum and discovery going. Fatboy Slim gets the energy really going with the superb "Gangster Tripping" which combines great rhythms and inventive, high energy beats.

The rest of the first half or so continues the joyful energy that the first songs bring forth so well with groups like Lionrock and Esthro. On the second half, though, I felt it occasionally gets a littlegoofy with songs like "To All The Lovely Ladies" by Goldo and towards the end, the intensity that the first group of tracks brought seems to be gone the slightest bit. It's not that I didn't enjoythe songs on their own, but I was left waiting for the groove that the opening started with to pick up again.

It's almost as if the album gets to the early hours of the morning after an all night party and is just a little too tired for one last dance. Still, I thought what I really enjoyed here more than balancesout what I didn't; overall, it's a wonderful mix of electronica, rock and other music that's a whole lot of fun and that will definitely make you want to get up and dance.
