Warner Home Video comes through again with a great transfer of what I think is their best film in the past couple of years. It's really a good example of how much better DVD is than VHS. I brought another TV into my room just to compare the DVD and VHS copies, and it blew away a couple of family friends who were thinking about getting into DVD. They had *that* phrase in mind: "How much better could it be?". I definitely showed them just how much better DVD can be. In other words, this is a solid transfer by WB, with deep, solid blacks and colors that are strong, bold and solid. Images are uniformly crisp and exceedingly sharp. The pan/scan side is also very crisp as well. You can clearly make out each strand of Gwyneth Paltrow's light blond hair or see the detail of the lights of New York City at night. I am going to go through the DVD again soon, but on the first time around I didn't see any sort of artifacts. It's a solid disc, and I'm sure that on closer inspection, I'll find the same. The sound is also quite good, making James Newton Howard's spooky score come alive.
The extras on this disc are great as well. Two commentary tracks that detail everything you could ever want to know about the making of this excellent film. On track number one you'll find star Michael Douglas, Director Andrew Davis and writer Patrick Smith Kelly. Douglas has a lot of very interesting things to say and so do the other two; it's a Grade-A commentary track. The other commentary track has producer Peter Macgregor-Scott, the director of photography, the costume designer, the set decorator and the production designer. Everything you could ever hope to know is included in a well-recorded and fascinating look at the making of the film from the eyes of it's main crew. Douglas doesn't talk as much as I would have liked him to have, but what he says are solid statements and what he says is always interesting information here. Also interesting is an alternate ending included on the disc, which you can choose to hear commentary included or without. Also included are text biographies of the actors and about the story.
